Important results from the project
The aim was to enable joining of mixed material combinations that cannot be joined with traditional processes. To facilitate implementation the project goal was to provide joining strategies ensuring high joint quality and process robustness, as well as evaluation of the methods from a production perspective. The project has fulfilled the goals by generating and communicating knowledge of methods for joining of mixed material combinations. Friction element welding and resistance element welding are suitable methods, that result in high quality joints and high process stability.
Expected long term effects
The results show that both friction element welding and resistance element welding enable joining of mixed material combinations that cannot be joined with conventional methods. Prior to implementation there is however a need for further evaluation, e.g. multi sheet stack-up, corrosion resistance and electromagnetic compatibility etc. Future implementation will enable a wider possible material selection, which will result in reduced product and component weight with maintained structural integrity and decreased environmental impact.
Approach and implementation
The trials and evaluation included in the project have examined the influence of material properties, process settings and production related disturbance factors on the joint quality and process stability. The project plan and execution resulted in a great understanding of the possibilities, limitations and production suitability of the joining processes.
