Innovative Thrust Vector Control for Future Aircraft

Reference number
Coordinator Saab AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 300 000
Project duration November 2025 - November 2028
Status Ongoing
Venture NFFP - Demo
Call NFFP-Demo: National Aeronautics Research Program´s demonstrator call

Purpose and goal

The project goal is to develop, test and verify an innovative technical solution for thrust vectoring that provides good control efficiency across the entire flight envelope. The project thus contributes to increased operational effectiveness and stealth adaptation of new aircraft, which strengthens the competitiveness and export potential of the Swedish aerospace industry. The technology also improves performance advantages of future flying systems which strengthen Swedish defense capabilities.

Expected effects and result

The project will develop a novel thrust vectoring solution that provides control efficiency across the entire flight envelope, which is useful for finless configurations. The technology increases Sweden´s security and competitiveness and strengthens the Country´s position in international programs. The solution can also be used in civil aircraft to reduce trim drag, thus reducing fuel consumption. The project increases the competence of integrating subscale flight-testing in product development.

Planned approach and implementation

The project extends for 36 months. It will be carried out in 3 iterations, so different demonstrators with different configurations will be test-flown. By testing the solution in a relevant environment (i.e. in flying demonstrators), the project will raise TRL and prepare the technology for use in real products. Flight test data will be handled and processed according to Saab´s current standards and procedures, so that results will be easily incorporated into the product development process.
