Innovative computational models for ceramic materials for impact events (ICOCE)

Reference number
Coordinator Impetusafea AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 450 192
Project duration May 2025 - April 2028
Status Ongoing
Venture Eurostars

Purpose and goal

Current methods for simulating brittle materials under dynamic load are limited, which often leads to unreliable and inaccurate simulation results. The ICOCE project tackles this by developing a new methodology for characterizing brittle materials, a novel material model suitable for their behavior, and by creating digital twins (material calibrations) of selected advanced ceramics. The numerical models will be implemented in the engineering simulation software Impetus Afea Solver.

Expected effects and result

The project will set the foundation for a material digital twin ecosystem. The ecosystem will connect stakeholders such as material producers, testing facilities and research institutes to collaboratively develop material digital twins that the industry requires. The ecosystem will benefit all stakeholders and is expected to generate new business opportunities for Impetus. The project enables Impetus to continue its growth and is expected to lead to new job opportunities within the organization.

Planned approach and implementation

The project connects Impetus with leading material scientists whose expertise and access to testing facilities are crucial for achieving reliable digital twins. An extensive experimental testing campaign on the selected ceramics will provide the material data required for the development of the digital twins. The digital twins will be launched and marketed on Impetus own distribution platform, where they will also become available to our user base.
