Purpose and goal

This project aimed to contribute to the scaling up of industrial and urban symbiosis (IUS) practices and their resource productivity benefits in Sweden and beyond. This was achieved by co-creating, disseminating, and utilising new and improved knowledge on: the state and improvement needs of Regional Institutional Capacity (RIC) for IUS in selected Swedish regions; good practices that can effectively improve RIC for IUS in Swedish regions.

Expected results and effects

The project provided knowledge-based guidance to public and private actors in selected Swedish regions and improved their capabilities to effectively improve conditions for scaling up IUS practices in their contexts. Impactful utilization of project results in other Swedish and Baltic Sea regions already started and will be systemically expanded in near future. This will assist the advancement IUS practices, increase resource productivity, and provide environmental and development benefits.

Planned approach and implementation

15 public and private actors collaboratively conducting Action Research (AR) in 5 different contexts co-created valuable knowledge, fostered intra- and inter-regional learning, and enabled effective action. Extending such AR in time and scope can further advance the knowledge-base and IUS practice. Public sector’s support in regions proved critical for steady progress. Strong interaction with Swedish and Nordic Networks for IUS assisted project’s success and enables scaling up its impact.
