Important results from the project

The overall aim of the project was to study the implementation of the new Biobank Act with a focus on obstacles and success factors as well as implementation outcomes. The objective was achieved through three sub-studies and close collaboration between Uppsala University and Biobank Sverige. Recommendations were formulated to further support the regions in implementing the Biobank Act, as well as recommendations for other national implementation projects.

Expected long term effects

Our hope is that the results from the project can be used to further strengthen the implementation of the Biobank Act so that its intentions can be realized. This would mean less administrative work for healthcare professionals but also for actors in academia and industry. Furthermore, we hope that the results can also contribute to strengthening the implementation of other national policies, innovations or similar with the recommendations we provide.

Approach and implementation

The project had three planned sub-studies that were carried out. In sub-study 1, interviews and document studies were conducted, focusing on the role of Biobank Sweden. In sub-study 2, a survey was conducted for biobank coordinators. In sub-study 3, interviews were conducted with stakeholders from healthcare, academia and industry. The schedule was largely followed and relevant information was collected. The collaboration between Uppsala University and Biobank Sweden worked beyond expectations.
