Important results from the project
The goal was to create an experimental setup for dynamic testing of bolted joints with application in the aircraft industry. A set-up has been created based on a technique called split-Hopkinson bar. The conducted dynamic tests were compared with static tests where higher loads at fractures could be observed at higher loading rates, which is in line with what was expected. The set-up can also be applied for tensile testing of thinner sheets to determine strength and ductility.
Expected long term effects
LTU and the division of Solid Mechanics has one of the few laboratories in Sweden that conducts mechanical testing at high deformation rates. Every investment in the area strengthens Sweden´s ability to conduct domestic testing and research, where stakeholders can be universities, institutes and companies.
Approach and implementation
The project consisted of three parts: design of bolted joints for dynamic testing, construction of test rig, based on split-Hopkinson bar with load generation using induction. Testing and comparison with static results. The timetable was followed and the cooperation between the partners was fruitful, where each party´s expertise was necessary for successful implementation.
