Important results from the project

The Heterotopias project successfully engaged over 500 diverse stakeholders in our futures prototypes. We connected communities & facilitated public dialogues on the ecological, economic & “backend” relationships that are critical to Malmö’s future food systems. We used participatory & speculative design to create tangible experiences & tools, centered non-humans, enhanced the city’s foresight competence, & shared a blueprint for citizens to create their preferable food systems.

Expected long term effects

The long-term effects of this project include hyper-localized, diversified food innovation, cultural food events in the region, & stronger ties between community partners and small food businesses. The futures prototypes have seeded the potential for co-creative, bottom-up systems change, and connected Malmö Stad staff to global sustainable procurement and urban food planning experts. The project also leaves behind an adapted foresight tool and regional food almanac for present-day civic action.

Approach and implementation

The Heterotopias project demonstrated potential food futures in Malmö by 2035. The project team used experience design, speculative co-design, foresight, and community collaboration to prototype hyper-local food systems founded on resilience, relationships, respect for non-human actors, and alternative economic models. In parallel, we enhanced public sector inclusive foresight competence. Over 500 people participated in events, workshops, and exhibitions held across Malmö neighborhoods.
