Project duration October 2014 - October 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has developed a business model for increased healthcare exports through cooperation between university hospitals and other health care providers. The model assumes long-term partnerships and joint optimized care chains. Property and industrial partners, in collaboration with university hospitals allow increased number of hospital beds. Larger volume in highly specialized care provides greater quality and efficiency, which also benefits both the Swedish Life Science exports. The model can be used by and in collaboration with other university hospitals.

Results and expected effects

Increased healthcare export produces higher patient volumes resulting in an improved quality of care and efficiency, which also benefits the Swedish patients. It also results in increased revenues and opportunities for Swedish life science industry. The prerequisite is increased care capacity, which is created using a model where the university create long-term partnerships with foreign hospitals and care providers that are located in the proximity of the university hospital. But it also requires optimized joint care chains and the use of new and existing technologies.

Approach and implementation

The project started with a hypothesis of a possible health care export model. KI conducted a survey of healthcare export nationally and internationally together with mapping of existing utilization of health care exports patients in collaboration. In addition Sveanor mapped the conditions for including the triple helix concept in the model. This knowledge was, together with study visits, added to the existing partnership models and experience in the optimization of chains of care. Strategy and business models were developed during several workshops with all project partners.
