Graphene-based Coatings for Heat Exchangers

Reference number
Coordinator SP SVERIGES TEKNISKA FORSKNINGSINSTITUT AB - SP Sveriges Tekniska Forskningsinstitut AB, Stockholm
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration December 2014 - October 2015
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen

Purpose and goal

The main goal was to develop Graphene Related Materials (GRM) based coatings for corrosion protection of stainless steel for PHEs in water applications. The corrosion resistance in a very corrosive environment was improved by using GRM in the coating. The project supports all the aims of SIO graphene by: - advancing the technical maturity of formulated GRMs - supporting the development of a Swedish based product with an international market - including research organizations and industrial stakeholders - knowledge transfer from SP and KTH to Alfa Laval on graphene based composites

Results and expected effects

The project has clearly shown that addition of graphene based materials can significantly enhance the corrosion protection of coatings on stainless steel in aggressive environments. These coatings need now to be optimized to get a commercially available product for stainless steel heat exchangers.

Approach and implementation

The project used commercially available graphene based materials as well as organic binders with proven efficacy for corrosion protection of steel. Several routes were investigated: - grafting and modification of the GRMs, - use graphene oxide in aqueous dispersion - disperse commercially available GRM into the binder. The project focus at the end was to disperse commercially available GRM in binder, and evaluate the corrosion protection of the coating.
