Important results from the project

The project demonstrates that demolition timber and industrial residual materials can be upcycled into high-value façade components through industrial processes. Prototypes were produced and tested for functionality, aesthetics, and manufacturability. LCA and cost analyses indicate competitive potential. While technically feasible, scaling requires coordinated investments and policy instruments due to a significant price gap between sellers and buyers.

Expected long term effects

The project lays the foundation for reuse 15–20% of the region’s wood waste into construction products instead of energy recovery, with a regional market value of SEK 30–180 million/year and nationally SEK 0.8–2.7 billion/year. Impact depends on upcoming EU requirements for reused content in buildings. Climate benefits include extended carbon storage and reduced logging. A 10-year roadmap was delivered, supporting a shift toward selective dismantling and new industry roles.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out in five work packages involving actors across the entire value chain: developers, clients, manufacturers, recycling and demolition companies. Site visits were conducted and workshops. WP2 focused on requirements and design, WP3 developed mechanical sorting and material yield calculations, WP4 addressed upcycling and prototype production, and WP5 analyzed sustainability, business models, and created an implementation roadmap.
