Project duration September 2021 - June 2025
Status Completed

Important results from the project

Several goals have been achieved: the strategy is anchored, national coordination and GMCs established, gene panels and whole genome sequencing introduced for rare diseases and childhood cancer, and advanced sequencing integrated in microbiology. NGP is being established, networks between healthcare, academia, patients and industry are strengthened, and collaborations like 1+MG and Testbed Sweden PHC have generated spin-off effects for research and healthcare.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, the GMS initiative is expected to promote more equitable precision diagnostics and medicine through national coordination across all regions. Shared gene panels, whole genome sequencing, and standardized bioinformatics pipelines, enable equal diagnostics, treatment, and trial access regardless of place of residence. The NGP establishes the foundation for a national IT infrastructure, enabling consistent data sharing, analysis, and equitable implementation throughout Sweden.

Approach and implementation

The project began with the development of a strategic plan that defined objectives, identified challenges, and outlined needs across relevant areas. This was achieved through systematic background analysis, mapping of clinical and research-related challenges, and dialogue with healthcare, academia, patient representatives, and industry. After five years, a similar process was conducted to evaluate progress, update goals and needs, and ensure continued relevance and prioritization of efforts.
