Purpose and goal
Votion aims to attract 3–5 additional oil industry partners by enabling shipment of 5–50 kg BioCrude for refinery-like testing. This strengthens collaborations and accelerates development toward a facility producing 2 tons/day. Around 20–40 biogenic residues will be tested to replace fossil crude oil in existing refineries.
Expected effects and result
Together with partners in the oil and forest industries, Votion produces bio-oil from forest industry residues. The resulting BioCrude can be processed directly in existing oil refineries without pre-treatment. The project is expected to lead to new partnerships, technical validation of 20–40 residue types, and accelerated development toward a facility with 2 tons/day capacity.
Planned approach and implementation
In 2026, BioCrude will be produced in the new GCC Reactor 2025. The focus is on testing various feedstocks (e.g. bark, coconut shells, sawdust, bagasse, grasses) and sending samples to oil and chemical companies. Feedback on quality will be collected and used to improve the process. The goal is to learn as much as possible and prepare for scaling up to 2 tons/day after the project ends.
