Call Business models for sustainable forest-based industries

Purpose and goal

The project will explore alternative revenue streams for non clear-cutting forest management and develop flexible business models to make non clear-cutting forestry economically attractive for forest owners. By understanding how biodiversity, carbon credits and social values, can generate value the project will develop new business models as alternatives to clear-cutting. The goal is to enable more actors to choose non clear-cutting methods based on their needs and market situation.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to provide a mapping and an understanding of how an increased share of non clear-cutting methods affects the forest value chain, with a focus on the drivers in the value chain and the conditions for forestry with an increase of non clear-cutting methods. The challenge is that traditional industries may lose their footing in such a change, so the project will develop business models where biodiversity and ecosystem services create economic incentives and revenue streams.

Planned approach and implementation

The first step is to map existing business models and experiences of non clear-cut forestry, while at the same time analyzing the drivers and obstacles of forest owners to choose non clear-cutting management methods. Next, new revenue sources that can be created when using non clear-cutting methods are identified. Existing and new revenue streams are combined to create new business models for non clear-cutting forestry, which are verified with the value chain to evaluate their potential.
