Important results from the project
In this preliminary study, we developed a new modular approach for fiber optic sensors in transformers and its components, in which different types of optical fiber with different measurement tasks can be combined in a miniaturized format and thus easily integrated into several different applications and enable a real-time flow of multiparametric sensor data. The feasibility and potential value of this miniaturized optical fiber cable for multiparametric measurements in transformers was evaluated in this project.
Expected long term effects
Results include: 1. A new thin (<1 mm) multiparameter fibre cable that can monitor temperature, strain and vibration simultaneously in a distributed way in transformer oil environment with this cable. 2. a fibre sensor for moisture measurement was developed and tested in relevant environment. expected benefits include: 1. creation of a digital twin that can store sensor data from the entire lifetime of the transformer from manufacturing, operation, and all maintenance efforts. 2. increased security, improved operation and a reduced cost all in one life cycle perspective>1>
Approach and implementation
- Development and fabrication process of a thin optical fibre sensor cable that can be used for multiparameter sensing. - Test and technical evaluation of the multi-parameter fibre optic cable for simultaneous distributed vibration and temperature monitoring in transformer environment. - A fibre-optic moisture probe, developed for measuring moisture in transformer assets, tested in real environment. - Commercial analysis the attractiveness of these solutions among end users in the process industry
