Important results from the project

The objectives set at the start of the project have been achieved. The project has delivered according to plan, with technical design, equipment analysis, customer needs mapping and a business plan for the pilot plant completed. In addition to these results, the project has contributed to a deeper understanding of the market´s eligibility requirements and opportunities. In addition, funding for the next stage of development has been secured during the course of the project.

Expected long term effects

The project is expected to lead to the establishment of a pilot plant for fossil-free graphite, strengthening Europe´s raw material resilience and reducing dependence on imported critical materials. In the longer term, the technology has the potential to contribute to significant emission reductions, notably in the steel industry, and to enable large-scale commercial production of fossil-free graphite, with positive effects for both the climate and the competitiveness of European industry.

Approach and implementation

The project consisted of five work packages: technical process design, equipment analysis, customer needs analysis, resource planning and results dissemination. The approach was well adapted to the project´s objective. The project developed as planned and followed the schedule. Some cost indications were higher than expected but did not affect the overall result. No major unexpected events occurred and the cooperation between the parties functioned as expected.
