Important results from the project
The project has aimed to show companies and academia the possibilities available for test operations in the mining area in Kaunisvaara (Arctic Tests, AT). Companies, mainly SMEs, have shown great interest and project activities have resulted in research applications between SME, Kaunis Iron and LTU, but also business activities between SME and Kaunis Iron. Within AT, LTU has carried out several teaching elements and thereby connected the educations to industry/labor market.
Expected long term effects
The main results from the project relate to the successful and appreciated teaching in the field, the establishment of an SME network together with the Swedish Mining Innovation and that the project paved the way for a collaboration agreement between LTU and Kaunis Iron on continued operations even after the end of the project. This collaboration, partly between LTU and Kaunis Iron but also with SME, is positive and active through, for example, applications for various research projects.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out in two parallel but interwoven tracks; one track towards developing the academy´s use (education/research) of the test bed and one towards attracting companies (industry) to the operations in Kaunisvaara. Examples of activities have been information for teachers, organized course modules that were given on the testbed, workshops, company fairs, site visits with companies, management meetings regarding the agreement between LTU and Kaunis Iron, etc.
