Evaluation of stress-strain fields with Digital Image Correlation on composite structures

Reference number
Coordinator RISE SICOMP AB - RISE SICOMP AB, Linköping
Funding from Vinnova SEK 319 349
Project duration August 2019 - December 2019
Status Completed
Venture Innovair/SMF

Important results from the project

Within the project, a non-contact measurement method, DIC (Digital Image Correlation), for evaluation of stress and strain fields on composite material under load, has been evaluated. The method has been found to be very efficient to evaluate even the small tensions that occur in carbon fiber composites and the use of two cameras for a three-dimensional analysis has been extremely valuable.

Expected long term effects

Measurements and evaluation of the results with Image Systems Motion Analysis (ISMA) equipment and software are very powerful and have given Saab the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the failure criteria of carbon fiber composites within the project. The method has proved to be useful and efficient and has also potential for full-scale and complex measurements.

Approach and implementation

Manufacture of laminates and preparation of test specimens has been done by RISE Sicomp. Test fixtures and testing have been done by Linköpings Universitet (LiU). Measurement has been carried out by ISMA and LiU. Evaluation of results has been done by Saab and ISMA. The project has given increased understanding of the measurement method and its possibilities, as well as an understanding of the test object´s properties. Regular meetings have been held within the project team to share experiences and discuss issues related to the project.
