Important results from the project

The purpose of this project has been to evaluate if functional interfaces have technical and commercial viability. During the project, a collaboration has been created between Elitkomposit and Brogren. In the project, a new type of inserts has been developed which can be implemented in composites during the lamination. The project results show that this type of effort has the potential to handle very large load introductions and that the technology is easy to scale up and implement in volume production.

Expected long term effects

The results of the completed manufacturing tests and strength tests give every reason for continued development. The concept potentially opens up a completely new business area in which the new technology could add technical height to a product already in the first manufacturing step, instead of, adding functions and features in subsequent steps in a longer and more complicated manufacturing process. Environmental benefits and cost savings can be made through eliminated processing steps and gluing operations.

Approach and implementation

Based on an idea from Elitkomposit, the project was started. Brogren Industries was involved as skilled metalworkers. A prototype insert was constructed and manufactured. A ceramic surface coating was chosen to provide good adhesion to epoxy. A hydraulic load insertion jig was built and reference coupons were tested. Coupons with metal inserts managed significantly larger load insertion than their conventional references, and the potential for improvement is big.
