Eurostars project Heat to Power, Climeon AB

Reference number
Coordinator CLIMEON AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 795 128
Project duration October 2013 - March 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project is to generate electricity and other forms of energy at competitive costs from heat streams of low value, e.g. industrial waste heat and geothermal heat in the range 60-80 oC. The goal has been reached. Detailed goals are defined in the work packages and relate to optimisation, engineering (Climeon and AlfaLaval), modelling and integration as well as use of all heat/cold streams (all). The goal has been reached. Test of a demonstration unit: instead, large scale deployment is being negotiated at this time. Demonstration achieved earlier in Sweden. Goal is reached.

Results and expected effects

The expected result is a modified method to utilize waste or geothermal heat of 60-80 oC in a profitable manner and to convert low value thermal heat into electricity and/or high value heat (e.g. >120 oC), on the basis of Climeon C3. Improved chemistry, equipment, and new modelling tools of energy systems are also part of the expected results. The result is clearly above expectation: successful demonstration of electricity production, new modelling tools, improved components such as turbines, new IP and ongoing negotiations on large scale deployment and licensing of technology.

Approach and implementation

The project is divided in 5 work packages: 1. Management and coordination, 2. Chemistry, 3. Engineering (new equipment, 4. Technical market requirements, 5. Demonstration Analysis: Early success in WP2 and 3 allowed us to accelerate the development. The technology was demonstrated and commercialised 2014/2015. This enabled negotiations on large scale deployment in Holland. During the project partner DNV KEMA was replaced by ECN. Through the project and ECN´s competence on heat pumps, there are now options for application of special heat pumps.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
