Call Challenge-Driven Innovation stage 1 initiation – 2019

Purpose and goal

The project will create innovative solutions that can make sustainable transport systems accessible to all and reduce the environmental impact of cities. The project has focused on how to solve the challenge with capacity shortages in the electricity grid when charging electric buses and thereby realize a large-scale conversion to electric vehicles. The goal is to develop a scalable system for smart energy management and optimization of charging that can also contribute to a more stable electricity grid and better use renewable energy production.

Expected results and effects

Good collaboration within the project and cooperation with partners have provided an excellent understanding of the technical and business conditions prevailing at the electrification of a bus fleet. This has resulted in: - The basis for advisory documents regarding public procurement of electric vehicles. - Description of a business model that enables investments in energy storage. - System design and requirements specification for energy management and charge optimization system that reduces power requirements and optimizes the use of locally produced energy.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has focused on gathering a strong constellation of actors to enable the realization of the solutions identified as necessary to achieve real results and implementations in Step 2. The focus has been on collaboration, data collection, interviews, and analysis of previously completed projects. The work was divided into eight work packages that produced reports, presentations, and specifications. Project meetings by telephone every two weeks and four major workshops have pushed the project forward and created a good foundation for continued collaboration.
