Important results from the project

The project succesfully met the goal to develop the key technical building blocks to enable the MetalJet microfocus X-ray source with a 1 year cathode lifetime at >1 kW power. The project also enabled the design, and operation of complete X-ray source prototypes with these key building blocks, especially new high-voltage-generators by Magnatek, validating the key specifications.

Expected long term effects

The technology developed within EXIBAT project will be integrated in Excillums MetalJet X-ray sources supplied to leading X-ray system integrators addressing the battery inspection challenge and other non destructive testing. The results contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals no. 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure ), no. 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), no. 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and no.13 (Climate Action) by enabling efficient battery manufacturing.

Approach and implementation

The project was guided by a clear task-based approach where Magnatek developed the novel high-voltage generation technology and Excillum the other source related components as well as complete source prototypes to validate the technology. Distribution between some tasks was restructured during the project in close collaboration between the partners to overcome experimental realities to keep continuously have the best path forwards to the overall project success.
