Important results from the project

The project demonstrated the feasibility of using Cascade Drives’ electromechanical linear actuators for the lifting function in a Kalmar ECH empty container handle vehicle. The technology can increase the lifting speed by more than 30% and reduce the energy required for the lifting function by 64%. In a future battery-powered vehicle this can thereby lead to increased range and operating time between charges.

Expected long term effects

The project was carried out on time and proved the goals that were set. Budget was exceeded to ensure delivery on time and to the right quality. Cascade Drives´ linear actuator solution was verified as technically feasible in the application. In order to achieve the impact goals of the project, commercial work needs to be carried out to also demonstrate an economically competitive life cycle calculation for all parties (users, vehicle owners, Kalmar and Cascade Drives).

Approach and implementation

In parallel with the initial collection of requirements and analysis, a concept was developed for the integration of Cascade Drives´ technology in an ECH mast. The final concept was iterated and the result placed demands on the design of both the actuator and the mast. After a detailed design, purchase and manufacture, the actuator system was assembled and functionality was tested, before it was mounted in the new mast of the vehicle. Finally, vehicle tests were carried out after commissioning.
