Purpose and goal

The overall aim of the project was to quantify driver comfort zones (including context-sensitivity and driver variabilitet) at left turns through intersections for use in the development of active safety systems. The project has responded to this aim by using different data sources (with focus on the sample on a test track with volunteers) and studied the driver´s decision to turn before or after an oncoming car (left turn across the path / opposite direction - LTAP / OD). Three different LTAP / OD contexts have been studied.

Expected results and effects

A set of probabilistic connection between driver and context have been developed to describe the drivers´ comfort zones when turning left. Interpretation has been made of the relationship between driver, vehicle and environment (context) in relation to the driver´s decision making, threat analysis and gaze search strategies. The project has provided an understanding of the use of the test track tests for the evaluation of driver response in critical and non-critical situations. Both Autoliv and VCC uses the results of research for the development of active safety systems.

Planned approach and implementation

The application was intended to implement three types of studies. Analysis of the available naturalistic driving data, test strip experiments, and controlled trials on the road. The first two study types have been implemented, while the third was carried out only as a pilot study in a thesis. The steering committee of the project felt that the kind of experiments (experiments on the way) was not ethically justifiable (with respect to personal safety), and decided instead to increase the proportion of test track tests. Analysis of SHARP 2 data has been added in the project.
