Purpose and goal

Council of the Forest aims to give voice to the forest inhabitants through the use of AI, and to challenge humans as sole decision-makers by opening new perspectives on forest dynamics, relationships, and decision-making processes. The goal is to develop an interactive digital and physical prototype exploring sustainable forest governance in Sápmi, where dialogue between human and more-than-human actors generates insights, inspires action, and deepens understanding of complex ecological systems.

Expected effects and result

The project reveals systemic frictions between human and more-than-human actors in the forest value chain. By integrating Sámi perspectives and ecological data with industrial and economic interests, an innovative model for relational forest governance is created. The result is a platform for critical reflection that strengthens ecological resilience and promotes sustainable decision-making by engaging visitors in critical reflection on the forest’s best interests.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is organized in five work packages: digital AI development, construction of a physical prototype, placement of the prototype in the biosphere, exhibition, and regional/public outreach. Local actors are engaged throughout, both during development and use of the prototype, creating opportunities for participation, learning, knowledge exchange, and long-term embedding of the project’s outcomes within the local community.
