CoSiMa - concept for digitized development of the sustainable soft materials of the future

Reference number
Coordinator Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB - Chalmers Tekniska Högskola Inst f Matematiska vetenskaper
Funding from Vinnova SEK 10 000 000
Project duration November 2021 - June 2025
Status Completed
Venture Advanced digitalization - Enabling technologies
Call Advanced and innovative digitization - autumn 2021

Important results from the project

The project goals were fulfilled. The simulations have been accelerated through the use of GPU:s. Methods for simulating mass transport, analysis of microscopy data and virtual material design have been developed. The project has improved the possibilities of simulating properties of materials in pharmaceutics, absorbing materials, forming fabrics in paper production, etc. A business model has been developed and a web page constructed to attract external projects jointly to Chalmers and RISE.

Expected long term effects

The project contributes to increased digitalization in research and development of material formulations in several industry branches. This is expected to lead to accelerated material, pharmaceutical and product development and increased profits for several large Swedish industries. Increased digitalization reduces the need for physical tests, leading to streamlining and reduced carbon footprint. The business model is expected to lead to spreading of methods and knowledge to other industries.

Approach and implementation

The project was structured around common interests from industry, which shared their challenges and solutions in project meetings. This created an exchange between companies, and with academia within relevant questions. In project meetings, the development of tools, digital structures, simulation and validation was also discussed. Courses were held in the use of digital tools. The collaboration climate was very good, and with a project extension of seven months the timeplan was kept.
