Important results from the project

The construction industry suffers from low productivity and has major effects on the environment. This is due to poor coordination of production resources, in comparison with the manufacturing industry, because of the highly dynamic processes. The project´s vision is to move from the current focus on individual machines and instead see the entire workplace as an optimized process that is coordinated through digital information. This vision has been implemented and validated in two large-scale demonstrations in connection with actual asphalt laying.

Expected long term effects

The project´s effects in the short term are a build-up of knowledge about how to improve the interaction in the system-of-systems that construction constitutes. Through digital information, we have shown in extensive demonstrations that it is possible to collect and process data, and the analysis shows that there is great potential for increased productivity and reduced climate impact.

Approach and implementation

The project has mapped the most important processes and information needs in construction activities. From this, principles for planning and information representation have been developed and realized in a technology platform. This has been used in two extensive field demonstrations from actual asphalt laying. There, data from a large number of machines have been collected over several weeks of work, and analyzed with regard to possible improvements. The results have been presented in various ways, including scientific publications and a doctoral dissertation.
