Purpose and goal

The objective of COMEJOIN is to ensure potential for further implementation of green and sustainable joining technique i.e., Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW), specifically focusing on high-strength aluminium grades and thermoplastic composites used in airframe structures. The key technical goals of this project are to develop a welding procedure for achieving strong joints and to ensure process stability with the help of process monitoring.

Expected effects and result

The study will be a guide to show which types of structures can be assembled with RFSSW and indicate factors to make the process stable. By using RFSSW, the need for a large number of fasteners/screws would be eliminated resulting in a sustainable solution to achieve a much lighter, robust and cost-effective assembly of aircraft structures.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is a collaboration between three parties. Saab AB is responsible for requirements, testing and materials. University West has lab equipment and academic expertise. DOF Tools AB designs and manufactures the tools. Suitable samples are defined by examining accessibility requirements in aircraft structures. Thereafter the testing in metallic materials and thermoplastic composites are conducted. Process monitoring and quality control are an important part of this process. Finally, demonstrators and evaluation are made.
