Circular Lightweight Powertrain - Pre-study (CLIP)

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - RISE
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration June 2026 - January 2027
Status Ongoing
Venture Circularity - FFI
Call Cirkularitet FFI – spring 2026

Purpose and goal

The purpose is to assess whether fibre‑reinforced plastics can replace metal in heavy truck powertrains without compromising function or durability. The goals are to identify 3–5 components with strong lightweighting potential, select promising materials and processes, demonstrate 20–40% weight reduction in at least one concept, and evaluate recycling pathways and environmental impact.

Expected effects and result

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out as a pre-study structured into four work packages: project management, requirement analysis of powertrain components, material screening and benchmarking, and assessment of manufacturing and recycling processes. The work is conducted in close collaboration between RISE and TRATON, focusing on identifying promising concepts, evaluating performance, and assessing sustainability and cost.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
