C-nanotube yarn as a welding additive for improved mechanical design

Reference number
Coordinator Luleå tekniska universitet - Institutionen för teknikvetenskap och matematik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration November 2010 - October 2011
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

We propose a composed weld material with significantly better mechanical properties than the surrounding metal sheets as a new approach to lightweight structure design. The project will test if long Carbon nanotube yarns can retain their structure and extremely high strength when incorporated into laser welds. Analysis of the weld will reveal how the yarn is geometrically, structurally and chemically embedded and subsequently whether it behaves advantageous under mechanical testing.
