Purpose and goal
The aim is to lay a scientific foundation for the development of automated safety systems that are better adapted to human abilities. The goal is to identify relevant metrics, analyze literature and data, and investigate the possibility of integrating behavioral-based models into existing simulation frameworks. The feasibility study constitutes a first step towards empirically based models for a behavioral point of no return that can contribute to increased traffic safety and user acceptance.
Expected effects and result
The pilot study is expected to provide a scientific basis for the development of behaviorally-based reference models, including defined performance metrics, an assessment of available data sources and recommendations for continued method development. The results provide the basis for a larger implementation project and may ultimately contribute to more human-centered driver assistance and automated safety systems, improved safety evaluations, and increased traffic safety and user trust.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is conducted in 3 work packages that aim to: 1) conduct a literature and data analysis to identify relevant performance measures for maximum human control capability and evaluate data sources, 2) investigate the conditions for describing overreliance on automation as a measurable condition and, if possible, develop an experimental design for continued research, and 3: analyze how behavior-based models can be integrated into existing simulation frameworks for safety benefit analyses.
