Important results from the project
The goal of the project was to verify a developed methodology to streamline the design of manufacturing jigs to ensure that it works and that profit can be obtained. The conclusion is that it is technically possible but that some more questions must be validated to ensure its effect, including how the methodology can be integrated with existing MBD (Model Based Definition) methodology at SAAB. This is something that will be studied in future projects.
Expected long term effects
The conclusion that can be drawn from this project is that it is feasible to streamline many processes in the construction of manufacturing jigs. Some technical challenges still remain and will be studied in future projects. If a large-scale roll-out of an automation tool be done, it would strengthen the Swedish aviation industry since it can reduce costs and lead time but with the same quality. It would also mean that resources are freed up and can be allocated on making even better products.
Approach and implementation
The choice of using workshops in combination with simpler technical functional tests meant that a result could be iterated to ensure the best possible solution. It also meant that all parties had an understanding of the activities each of them carries out. The method clarified what challenges remained to overcome in order for an implementation to take place.
