Important results from the project
Open source CFD solutions have gained substantial momentum as alternatives to commercial CFD tools. The application of OpenFOAM toolbox has witnessed steady growth in recent years. However, the Swedish steel community faced limitations in harnessing the full potential of these tools, due to the absence of integrated modeling platforms like SPRIME (Solidification Prime Interplay of Grain Structure and Segregation). Thus, the mobility during this project aimed at facilitating employing such integrated platforms for continuous casting research in SWEDEN.
Expected long term effects
** maskinöversatt ** The project has successfully achieved the goals related to the development of advanced CFD, focusing on their application in the CC process. The exchange has brought significant added value by fostering a deeper and more collaborative relationship between both organizations. The exchange enabled us to work closely and intensively on adapting SPRIME models to the steel industry. Additionally, this exchange has generated significant value by equipping our organizations with advanced numerical modeling capabilities tailored to the steelmaking industry.
Approach and implementation
In pursuit of harnessing the full capabilities of this code and accessing enhanced support and training, the exchange embarked on a total of a month-long visit to Think Solidification France spanning over two trips. During the 1st trip, the knowledge transfer consisted of a mix of hands on series was provided with comprehensive insights into various aspects of simulation. In the 2nd phase of our mobility program, the exchange embarked on the task of conducting CFD analysis, encompassing both 2D and 3D mesh simulations, under the guidance of Think Solidification France.
