Important results from the project
Due to the Corona pandemic, KMH needed to quickly switch to digital teaching. The need became clear for digital tools with low audio delay, for music teaching, rehearsals and performances, where musicians need to play in sync but cannot meet. Elk´s Aloha equipment enables just that. The sound is transmitted over the internet much faster than a computer or telephone can handle. Elk has collaborated with KMH to use and markedly improve the hardware and software.
Expected long term effects
KMH´s students and staff have continuously used Aloha for teaching, research, and musical collaborations at a distance, all of which would have been impossible without Aloha. Even after the project’s end, KMH continues to use the Aloha devices in its daily operations. New collaborations have now also just begun, for interaction between remote academic institutions and KMH, which were previously impossible. The project has shown that it is very likely to revolutionize teaching music at a distance.
Approach and implementation
During the project’s first phase, the KMH group conducted tests, with a group of improvising singers and two teachers, in close contact with Elk. Broader testing followed, where teachers and students were invited to test and contribute with feedback. Very valuable feedback to Elk Audio has resulted in an improved technology and experience. The project also included gathering information on how those who use Aloha experience making music, which forms the basis for an upcoming research study.
