Important results from the project
The project was in response to Covid-19 to reduce airborne disease transmission onboard public transportation. The technology has been in live testing since the summer of 2021, when it was installed on a fossil-free hybrid-electric city bus in urban traffic. The prototype a bus that has since travelled more than 40,000 kilometres Furthermore this work has led to a humanitarian aid effort that has delivered ambulances to Ukraine.
Expected long term effects
The project achieved the expected technological expectations and demonstrated successful operation under real-world conditions, in both normal and extremely cold conditions. What sets this solution apart is its flexibility, allowing it to be retroactively installed on a wide range of vehicles. This adaptability is particularly valuable in crisis situations where a rapid response is essential.
Approach and implementation
A key advantage of this system is that it operates without the need for filters, chemicals, or disinfectants. In our experiments with a 12-meter-long hybrid-electric city bus, the system demonstrated remarkable efficiency, rapidly exchanging and decontaminating the air from the cabin. The cabin can be fully purged of a tracer gas, used to simulate a contaminant, underscoring its effectiveness in maintaining clean and safe air quality for passengers. These results show that the project´s implemented achieves the potential of the concept.
