Status Completed

Important results from the project

The project has advanced the development of a national network and a resource center which aims to scale up industrial and urban symbiosis (IUS) practices in Sweden. This is achieved by developing an initial set of information and guidance material to support IUS facilitation and making the material available via a newly developed web-platform. Organisational, functional and financing aspects of a national center is also further developed and stakeholders from 8 regions are mobilised towards establishing regional nodes for IUS support.

Expected long term effects

Project deliverables directly respond to the needs expressed by stakeholders interested in supporting IUS in Sweden and are tested with positive results in practice. This indicates a strong potential to scale up developments with wider diffusion. With further development of the online platform a wider supporting effect is expected. Progress with organisational and finance aspects of the national center, and with mobilisation of actors in multiple regions towards developing regional IUS nodes, are also promising steps towards scaling up IUS in Sweden.

Approach and implementation

Complementary competencies of project partners were effectively combined, resulting in good outputs. Despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, project partners were able to work effectively both with each other and with external stakeholders in fulfilling the objectives. Reverting to 100% on-line activity after March 2020 worked well with partner interactions, a national gathering and some tests of developed tools, but made some planned interactions with other stakeholders difficult. Overall, there were no serious negative impacts.
