Important results from the project
The goal of the project has been achieved by demonstrating the materials design approach, making a gap analysis, and disseminating the work. It is proven feasible to implement an ICME-based design approach for a prototype using best available computational tools and models, within a short period of time.
Expected long term effects
Results of the project include: (1) A computationally-designed prototype of advanced lightweight steel; (2) Demonstration of the process of the computational design and the usage and integration of models, tools, and databases; (3) A gap analysis summarizing the limitations of available computational tools and databases as well as boundaries of knowledge. Expected effects have been realized by disseminating the results and attracting industrial and academic interests.
Approach and implementation
The materials design approach implemented includes: (1) Making a systems-design chart defining the design space and items and their connections in between; (2) Definition of objectives and constraints based on a literature survey on advanced lightweight steels and their industrial needs; (3) Development and integration of computational models, tools, and databases to make a design material with optimal processing parameters.
