Important results from the project
The main objective was to investigate whether adapters for surgical instruments can be manufactured using AM, as well as a combination of AM and cutting machining. The results show that such manufacturing can result in lower costs. Utilizing AM alone does not reduce costs. By initially designing the products for a combination of manufacturing with AM and cutting processing, it is possible to get better product properties and reduced costs for the products.
Expected long term effects
** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** Adapters for navigation systems for surgical navigation can be manufactured at lower cost using AM. This presupposes that the products are designed from the outset with the aim of utilizing a combination of AM and cutting machining for the manufacture of the products.
Approach and implementation
Ortoma AB has delivered production files to two AM companies, Lasertech LSH AB and Aim Sweden AB and received production samples back. The samples have been tested by Ortoma´s staff and compared with ordinary products, according to cost and quality. The results show that a combination of the company Aim´s method and cutting processing can give better results and lower costs for the manufacture of surgical adapters.
