Important results from the project
The project met the objectives, and produced the following deliverables: • A Design Framework for Women and Caregivers Centered Mobility Hubs, published in the form of an open-source slide deck (I guess we can add the web link to the landing page here) • A think piece on challenges, needs, and opportunities from the perspectives of stakeholders and interest groups representing users (SUMC, 2024) • A Final Report summarizing findings, learning, and the Design Framework • Presentations at events
Expected long term effects
The Design Framework could be a vital tool in achieving a just transition from carbon-intense to low-carbon transportation systems while improving the mobility experiences for women and caregivers. It could spur innovations in services and products and open up other markets planning investments in new infrastructure. Transportation is a significant contributor to global GHG emissions. Mobility hubs that meet broader needs could help households and cities to “shift and avoid private car trips”.
Approach and implementation
We reviewed research on travel needs and patterns of women and caregivers and on mobility hubs. We ran workshops with transportation and planning experts. We held focus groups and interviews with women and caregivers, 11 to 95 years old, that we reached through community-based organizations. We held an in-person workshops between the two project partners where we conceptualized the design framework and how it could be helpful. We iterated a lot and met often online to finalize the product.
