Important results from the project

Z.trusion enables 6-minute charging of electric cars, without overheating. A lightweight, tab-cooled, structural battery concept for electric cars was validated in fast charging tests in February at RISE Battery Test Center in Borås. With a new patented concept where cooling, cell fixation and structure are integrated in an optimized 3D profile that can be z.truded at low cost without machining, RELIEFED has proven that with 80% fewer parts and 30-40% lower weight you can make a recyclable battery that can be charged in 6 minutes - at low cost without material waste.

Expected long term effects

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** 6 minutes charging time, low temperature, low cost and low weight in a concept that is recyclable and producible in existing extrusion lines attracts interest: Discussions with various vehicle manufacturers are conducted and a collaboration with Fraunhofer IWU has begun. project expects commercial projects based on z.trusion in the electric car industry to start within 6-12 months. A proposal for EU funding for a larger z.truding and battery lab has been submitted to the EU.

Approach and implementation

Two tab-cooled topology-optimized battery modules were manufactured and standard 21700 cells were mounted in the modules together with 30 thermal sensors. At RISE Battery Test Center, the modules were charged and discharged in cyscles. The fastes charge was done in 6 minutes from 20-80% SOC (6C) and then discharged in 12 minutes (3C). During both charging and discharging, temperatures on cells, modules and coolant were continuously measured by RISE Battery Test Center staff. No cells were overheated and the cooling capacity of the module / concept was confirmed as verified.
