Work in Sweden: Experiences of Sweden by labor migrants and international students

Digitally Thu 7 May 2026 at 10:00-11:00

What attracts international talent? What challenges do talents face during their first time at Sverige? I? To what extent do we retain highly qualified immigrant workers and international students in Sweden?

This web page has been machine translated. If there are any uncertainties, please refer to the Swedish text.

Welcome to a webinar organized within the government mission Work in Sweden!

About the webinar

Within the framework of the government's Work in Sweden mission, Statistics Sweden has produced statistics on the number of labor immigrants and international students. This has provided important knowledge and a good basis for continued learning about these target groups.

The survey on labor immigrants' experiences of Sweden supplements knowledge with information about Sweden's attractiveness, what is required for a successful establishment and the difficulties highly qualified labor immigrants face.

The survey on international students is about why the students chose Sweden for their studies and whether they are considering staying.

On the agenda

During the webinar you will receive:

  • A report on the most important results from the survey on highly qualified labor immigrants from the EU and third countries who immigrated to Sweden 2021–2024.
  • The survey is about their experiences of work, contact with authorities and life in Sweden.
  • A presentation of the survey on international students who organize their own studies abroad, so-called "freemovers". We will tell you why they chose Sweden, whether they are considering staying in the country and what challenges they see.
  • Closing question session.

Participating

Presenters: Sinisa Sauli, Caroline Rathsmann and Paula Kossack, Statistics Sweden
Moderator: Mats Wessman, Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development.

Target group

The webinar is aimed at those of you who work with issues that are in various ways connected to attracting, establishing and retaining international competence - for example within public authority, municipality, regions, universities, employer organisations or other actors who collaborate on competence supply.

About the seminar series

This is the seventeenth webinar in the series of webinars that we are arranging within the framework of the government mission Work in Sweden. The first part of the webinar, with the above presentations, will be recorded and can be viewed afterwards. At the end of the broadcast, the recording will be closed and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

During 2026, at approximately monthly intervals, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth will continue broadcasting on current issues and themes connected to our work with the Work in Sweden mission in collaboration with the authorities that are part of the mission.
