How we work with open data

Open data is digital information that is available for anyone to use. Vinnova's open data consists of information about our funding and our funded project.

This web page has been machine translated. If there are any uncertainties, please refer to the Swedish text.

Vinnova's open data contains comprehensive information about:

  • our programme, calls for proposals and applications that make it possible to apply for funding with us
  • the research and development projects we have funded

We share our open data

To share our open data in a controlled way, we have developed so-called APIs (Application Programming Interface). APIs are a programming interface that can be processed and, for example, used to build apps or web services.

Download our APIs

Vinnova's open data can be used freely without fees or licenses (CC0). We have two sets of APIs. Dels GDP API and our the elderly APIs.

API for GDP (Common Data Project)

GDP is a collaboration between Swedish research and innovation funders with the goal of enabling the sharing of open and comparable data. Through a common data standard, data about funding can be shared in a uniform way. GDP is a results of a government assignment and is run by the Energy Agency, Formas, Forte, the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova. To determine the data content of the standard, the authorities have a collaboration with external data consumers.

Information about the common information model for GDP and technical specifications for the API can be found on GitHub ( Common-data-project-GDP/Documentation: Documentation for the GDP standard).

The API has three endpoints that share data on three basic elements that are common to the five GDP authorities' funding processes: calls for proposals, applications, and funded activities.

To extract data using the API, you need to create an account and obtain an API key. Additional information is available when you log in to the API portal below.

Vinnova's implementation of GDP

Vinnova shares data for most of the GDP information model. Data for applications and funded activities with decision dates from 2010-01-01 onwards are included in the data sharing.

A “ call for proposals” in GDP corresponds to an “ application round” in Vinnova's funding process, through which organizations can apply for funding.

The generic classification "CategorisationFinancial" in GDP contains, for Vinnova, the sixteen categories that Vinnova asks applicant to classify the applications with.

Data on research subjects that are shared is according to the system for research subjects adopted by the Swedish University Chancellor's Office in 2011 ( Standard for Swedish classification of research subjects 2011).

Missing GDP standard data

Vinnova only shares data about people who are project manager, who are referred to in the GDP data sharing as "Responsible Person". Data about other people who participate in the implementation of the funded activities are not included. Vinnova does not collect data about these people as the authority's funding is focused on the implementing organizations.

In addition, the following data is also missing according to the standard:

  • Employer information for individuals
  • ORCID information for individuals
  • English names of organizations
  • Keywords for applications
  • The classifications of support form and grant form

Vinnova's previous APIs

There is overlap between GDP-API and data in Vinnova's previous APIs in terms of data content, but GDP-API also enriches by adding new data. As GDP-API follows the common data standard, which means that the data shared is directly comparable with data from the other GDP authorities' APIs, Vinnova recommends that data extraction is primarily done with GDP-API.
