Project duration November 2015 - September 2016
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Purpose and goal

The purpose was to survey opportunities, challenges and effects of digitalisation within the Swedish metals producing industry, and to layout a graduate school where the industry could boost its competence regarding the effects of digitalisation on organisation and staff. The survey shows that the industry expects short term cost savings and medium term business development. Challenges are primarily outdated equipment and lack of compentence. The layout of the graduate school is complete, although no application for funding has yet been made.

Expected results and effects

The effect strived for is that the Swedish metals producing industry boosts its competence as to deal with the operational challenges posed by digitalization such that its competitiveness is strengthened. The immediate result is that the issue has gained increased attention, and several companies have as a consequence taken measures such as appoining people responsible for digitalization.

Planned approach and implementation

The survey was carried out in the form of all day meetings with senior management and deep interviews with its individual members. Also the planning of the graduate school was done primarily in the form of meetings and interviews with company representatives. One obstacle was that the companies were unsure as to whom the issue should be assigned to. However, the process has drawn attention to the issue and thus the project has contributed to its objectives, albeit it being clear that more work is required to reach them in full.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
