Purpose and goal

We aim to develop an eco-friendly surface treatment process to replace decorative chrome, free from chromium, nickel, cyanides, and boric acid. The production process will be stable, scalable, and to work on both metal and plastic. Initial focus is on creating decorative surfaces for demanding applications like marine components, with a later expansion to the automotive industry. The overarching goal is to meet current and future environmental standards while enabling new design possibilities.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to deliver a sustainable surface treatment process free from chromium, nickel, cyanides, and boric acid. The process will be compatible with both metal and plastic, offering unique design possibilities such as colored or metallic black finishes. Anticipated outcomes include reduced environmental and health impacts, enhanced competitiveness for Swedish and international stakeholders, improved workplace safety, and lower energy consumption compared to current technologies.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be carried out through multiple work packages covering testing, optimization, process adaptation, and scaling. The Swedish consortium, led by Provexa Technology, collaborates with international partners to develop and test a complete surface treatment process. A small-scale pilot line will be established to ensure robustness and quality in an automated production environment. The focus also includes involving OEM partners to validate the technology on real-world products.
