Important results from the project

Yes, our own internal goals, which were the two prototypes and to pursue in-depth discussions about participation and power structures in urban planning through conversations with officials and others in the urban planning field. The conversations have confirmed that there are no concrete obstacles for municipalities to test the Folktomten format. Umeå Municipality has not given the project a clear place, and we have sought other contexts in Umeå and started working with other municipalities.

Expected long term effects

The main goal is to achieve real change in land distribution practices. Municipalities can strengthen small players and create gaps for a different economic dynamic. We have initiated smaller collaborations with other municipalities. The Manual maps out the conditions for the format and shows possible starting points for implementing it. Folktomten does not require any changes to the law and we hope that the work can influence the view on urban development and the role of the municipality.

Approach and implementation

The project has sought new paths in urban planning and municipal land distribution. The two parts - a manual for small-scale land division, and Grundklumpen; a prototype for a self-sufficient unit have been produced in parallel with a series of talks. Much space in the project has been devoted to discussing and studying today´s power structures and distribution processes where municipalities can develop new roles. The project has evolved to target municipalities in general and not just Umeå.
