Important results from the project

A European project based on 5-6G networks and the European FRMCS network for railways. Cyber secure persistent communication and positioning goal at railways and information from sensors both on the track and in the trains. FRMCS could also be developed into a channel to fly unmanned vehicles over the railway to detect faults on and around the track, people or animals and fallen trees. Via FRMCS we can get safer, faster and more reliable railway connections with sensors on trains and UAVs.

Expected long term effects

Knowing where you are and able to communicate with your surroundings are some of the factors that allow you to take relevant measures in the event of accidents, but also prevent collisions and make transport flow smoothly. Mobile networks can help by often being equipped with GNSS receivers and offering Internet connectivity in most places. The railways are now getting their own mobile network FRMCS which could make the railway faster, safer and more reliable with sensors and support for UAVs.

Approach and implementation

Researchers working in various areas of radio communication and mobile networks, positioning with GNSS satellites and the use of supporting network RTK services that warn if positions are manipulated or disturbed. It can also send correction data to the user so that they can be assured of cm accuracy in their position. Railways need exact position and time to operate safely. We met some innovative railway researchers and decided to apply for an EU project with many partners to do it.
