Purpose and goal

The project intends to develop equipment to communicate with unmanned vehicles (UXV) with less risk of the connection being disrupted by natural phenomena such as space weather, technical problems or antagonistic threats, which could jeopardize work with the vehicles. The main purpose is to support flying UAVs as support in fighting forest fires, search for people lost in the forest or operations such as sea rescue. Such tasks require ability to fly safe & legal out of direct line of sight.

Expected effects and result

We intend to deliver research applications on secure positioning, navigation and communication systems that will enable authorities to grant permission to fly out of sight even with large UAVs that can be used to waterbomb fires and monitor rescue efforts, UXVs that can pull out hoses on the ground, and unmanned boats for surface transport. The systems must also be cyber-secure to reduce the risk of unauthorized influence on such socially important operations

Planned approach and implementation

In the project, we will collaborate with organisations that have developed parts of the systems of systems required together with infrastructure to achieve safe, legal and expedient societally important activities with unmanned vehicles in the air, on the ground and at sea. The design of the systems will be presented and tested together. When infrastructure and systems are available, great opportunities to develop services also open up for business, healthcare and other businesses.
