Purpose and goal
The objective of the project has been to deliver improved methods for estimating travel demand, based on data from mobile communication networks, as well as road traffic models that are tailored for this data source. Within the project, a new computational scheme for processing signaling data from mobile networks for travel estimation has been developed and evaluated. The project has actively collaborated with relevant stakeholders to together identify transport applications of high potential
Expected results and effects
The work within the project has resulted in a new computational scheme for processing signaling data from mobile networks for estimating mobility and travel demand. The scheme, together with methods for anonymizing data, has been tested using large-scale data from mobile operators. This has generated new insights and knowledge on not only the performance of the methods, but also potentials and challenges in the use of the data type for travel demand estimation as well as new initiatives within the research area.
Planned approach and implementation
Linköping University, SICS, Ericsson, and Sweco have worked together on developing schemes for gaining insights into travel demand from the data generated from the use of mobile phones. Ericsson´s collaborative platform for managing data from mobile networks has been an important instrument for the research collaboration. The project has via workshop actively contributed to dissemination results and knowledge to relevant stakeholders, to bring them closer to each other and thereby stimulate new initiatives aimed at utilizing the data source for transport systems.
