Tracy Forestry - Patented origin marking of timber for global verification of long-term sustainable forestry.

Reference number
Coordinator Tracy of Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 825 000
Project duration October 2022 - December 2024
Status Ongoing
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA
Call PiiA: Data analysis in process industrial value chains, spring 2022

Purpose and goal

Tracy of Sweden´s technology development is part of stopping illegal logging and trade in deforested and stolen timber. In parallel, the technology is intended to be used for both national and global verification of long-term sustainable forestry with preservation and tools to streamline raw material extraction. Our objective is to create a global standard for origin marking of timber and pulpwood and meet the UN´s climate goals for long-term sustainable forestry. The traceability enables a verification of the EU´s Timber Regulation, FSC and PEFC traceability requirements.

Expected results and effects

The project is validated in a real environment. To lead the technical development of traceability through log end image recognition, our architecture is updated and implements GPU support and parallelization in the image recognition algorithm. In the field study, the aim is to obtain a large database of log images, 2000 images/day for a few months, to be able to build our megadatabase and develop and implement a segmentation model and train our algorithm to be able to identify quality defects and characteristics of the individual log.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be implemented as follows: (2022-11-15 - 2024-12-31) Step 1: Database construction for large data volumes and rapid recognition and algorithm development of log properties. Step 2: Integration of Forest Data / Image analysis. 3. Validation and testing in a real environment / Field studies. 4. Ongoing evaluation / Process analyses. 5. Sawmill installations pilot project (then regional/national). 6. Market introduction and processing of the market.
