Important results from the project
The project has achieved the goals through methods that were specific, measurable and achievable. The news value of the project has been great since the government intends to accept the UN Convention of the Child as Swedish law, inducing the need for tools to implementing it on children´s urban environments. The objectives of the project have been met.
Expected long term effects
The aim was to develop an economic value of play from a child´s perspective, to create a ´Fair Play certificate´ used to certify child-friendly urban environments. The study investigated urban children´s environments and workshops with children to establish criteria for the ´Fair Play Certificate´. The social benefit of a ´Fair Play Certified´ schoolyard was calculated. In a construction industry survey over 72% of respondents said that a Certificate would be effective to build environments with child perspective. The study was concluded with an international two-day seminar.
Approach and implementation
The project´s strength has been the multidisciplinary collaborations with children, architects, municipalities and developers. Unique, specific and measurable methods were selected, such as using children´s evaluation of the urban environment to define a ´Fair Play Certified´ schoolyard, which we evaluated in terms of public benefit using methods for measuring ecosystem services. The team had expertise in urban development with the child´s perspective, environmental economics and construction industry as well as administrative support from Vinnova.
