Important results from the project

The project goals have been achieved, and Örebro municipality´s work on play environments has sparked significant interest from other municipalities. Evaluation was conducted through workshops, study visits, and a research study. Three key documents were produced: a guide program to Örebro´s play environments, a report from Örebro University´s study of extended schoolyards, and a guide on inclusive play. The city park´s playground was redesigned as an example of an inclusive play environment.

Expected long term effects

The project aims to provide children access to stimulating play environments that contribute to their well-being, health, and development. Compilations of Örebro municipality´s experiences, along with built examples, can inspire and help more municipalities work strategically towards this purpose. The work supports the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and increases adults play literacy - understanding the importance of play and what characterizes good play environments

Approach and implementation

During the project´s three years, the playground in Örebro´s city park was completely rebuilt, a comprehensive observation study was conducted on several "extended schoolyards", and Örebro´s park unit´s development work on play environments was evaluated through numerous activities. All activities took more time than anticipated but were completed. A greater focus on inclusive play environments than initially planned led to expanded collaboration with Örebro University and several other actors.
