Important results from the project
The purpose and goal of the project has been to increase knowledge of norms / normcriticism among architects and to develop guidelines for architects how they can use a norm-creative perspective in the design process. We developed a workshop-based educational material and preformed workshop together with colleagues. In collaboration with colleagues and projects at Tengbom and with the support of expertise, the results of the workshops have led to guidelines of how a norm-creative design process for architects could look like, which we have summarized in a guide.
Expected long term effects
The main goal was to develop a prototype within Testlab that in a few years´ time will result in methods to work norm-critical within Tengbom´s entire organization. The outcome so far is that we have developed a prototype. Testlab, from our point of view, is the first step to reformulate the architectural role from a larger societal perspective, to break norms in planning and design and opening up new business opportunities. Since we started working with these issues, we have received several requests for knowledge in norm-creative design within projects and architectural competitions.
Approach and implementation
The project initially consisted of 5 parts, which was redistributed into 3 parts. An unexpected challenge was the anchoring initially. There was uncertainty among colleagues to work with the issues. Developing a process in parallel with applying it in an active project was also a challenge. But we saw an opportunity to involve the customer with feedback on the process and to see pitfalls. TESTLAB is, as we see it, a way to move positions, but it cuts step by step. Covid 19 led us to change digital ways of organizing workshops and feedback.
